Is sports betting legal in the US?
As of May 14, 2018, the Supreme Court ruled to overturn a federal law that made sports betting illegal in most states. This means that the legality and regulation of sports betting now falls under state law. New Jersey has been fighting for this ruling for over 6 years and many speculate the state will have sports books opening within weeks, if not a few days of the ruling. Some of these sports books in New Jersey have even already been built in anticipation of this ruling. We will of course report updates here as soon as they happen.

What other states will legalize sports betting soon?
Delaware attempted to expand rulings to allow sports betting back in 2009, but was hit with a lawsuit from the NFL, NHL, NCAA, NBA, and MLB – compromising its advance. Now that legal and regulated sport betting in the US is inevitable, the NBA and MLB are changing their tune and lobbying for states to legalize betting so they can grab some profit themselves. So Delaware is expected to start the process to broadly legalize sport betting again.
The following states have either already passed state laws that legalize sport betting or have fast-tracked legislation to do so: Iowa, Mississippi, Pennsylvania, New York, West Virginia, and Connecticut.
The following states have publicly announced their intent to begin legislation to legalize sport betting (or have already started): Illinois, California, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Rhode Island, South Carolina, and Oklahoma.
Both Oregon and Montana already have current laws (that are now valid with the Supreme Court ruling) that allow some sport betting including fantasy football and auto racing. These laws could be expanded to include a wider scope of sports.
Those states we haven’t mentioned yet have state laws that prohibit sports betting or gambling that would first need to be repealed or amended. If and when that happens, we will report it here.
